Latest ESPN Mock Draft Has Byron Murphy II Heading to Las Vegas
© Daniel Dunn, USA TODAY

After initially serving as a backup during his first two years at Texas, Byron Murphy II emerges as a notable riser in this year's NFL draft class. He showcased versatility along the Longhorns' defensive line, demonstrating the ability to line up across different positions, ranging from nose tackle on the interior to defensive end on the edge.

ESPN Insider Field Yates projects Murphy to be high on the Raiders list as their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

"Primary needs for the Raiders also include quarterback and offensive line, but four QBs are off the board, and the overall depth of the tackle class makes finding a second-round starter viable," Yates said. "Murphy fills a massive gap along the defensive front after an incredible 2023 season, too. He offers true difference-making play as a pocket compressor (he had 5.0 sacks this past season) and run defender. Few players in this class play full tilt to the extent Murphy does."

Additionally, Murphy exhibits promising potential both as a run defender and as a pass-rusher. In terms of pass-rushing technique, Murphy's repertoire currently features effective rip moves and arm-overs as his primary tools.

Additionally, his bull rush shows inconsistency, particularly in his leg drive post-contact, indicating an area that requires improvement.

One of the primary concerns surrounding Murphy is his height, which may fall short of the ideal for an NFL defensive tackle, potentially impacting his arm length. However, pre-draft evaluations such as the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine can provide clarity on this aspect, while most other issues appear correctable.

With his ability to disrupt the pocket and excel as a run defender, Murphy could bring a dynamic presence to the Raiders' defense.

As he transitions to the NFL, Murphy's potential to excel as a 3-technique in even fronts further enhances his value to the team's defensive scheme.
