Luck might be on the side of the Los Angeles Chargers and their 2024 first-round draft pick
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers hold the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As they attempt to retool their roster, the Chargers will look to hit a home run with that selection. It has been heavily speculated that they will take an offensive lineman with the pick as new head coach Jim Harbaugh is a big believer in building the trenches.

Wide receiver is also a legitimate option after the Chargers moved away from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams earlier this offseason. It would certainly be intriguing for them to give quarterback Justin Herbert a big-time No. 1 receiver for years to come in the form of either Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabors or Rome Odunze.

Regardless of who Los Angeles selects, it has a great chance of landing a very good player picking that high. The Chargers are on a run of luck picking fifth overall in the draft, having selected two hall of famers - running back LaDainian Tomlinson and linebacker Junior Seau - at that position.

Tomlinson was drafted in 2001 and is one of the best RBs in NFL history. He led the league in rushing twice, rushing touchdowns three times and was a six-time All-Pro. Seau, who was drafted in 1990, was a nine-time All-Pro and a 12-time Pro Bowl selection. He finished his career with 1,847 tackles and 56.5 sacks.

Can the Chargers strike gold at No. 5 for a third consecutive time? There aren't many positions on their roster that are locked down, so are there are numerous possibilities.  There could be a scenario where L.A. trades down, especially if another team is looking to move up for a quarterback.

However, with QBs expected to be taken with the first three picks, it will be very enticing for the Chargers to basically have their choice of every other position on the board.
