The winds of change have come for the New England Patriots. In an offseason that has seen the storied franchise part from their all-time great head coach, it’s easy to feel like anything is possible for the Patriots. Kendrick Bourne took a shot at manifesting a positive change for the Patriots earlier today, as he seemed to be trying to recruit Brandon Aiyuk.
The Patriots’ wide receiver posted on social media earlier today, responding to a fan post suggesting that New England should trade for 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
“Let’s get em! You getting all the targets u want!” Bourne said, retweeting the original fan post that features an image of Bourne and Aiyuk from their days together with the 49ers.
The fan post states that Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade. However, this was refuted by Aiyuk’s agent Ryan Williams of Athletes First.
Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team posted on social media that it is possible that Aiyuk could still get traded. Despite the fact that Aiyuk’s agent had to set the record straight that his client has not officially requested a trade, that does not eliminate the possibility that a trade could occur at some time in the future.
“Aiyuk has implied that he deserves to be paid as a top wide receiver and has hinted he’s getting frustrated,” Meirov said.
“There’s a gap they’d have to bridge for this all to get resolved, but as of today, Aiyuk has not told the 49ers he wants out. That’s where things stand.
With or without Brandon Aiyuk, the New England Patriots still need to substantially invest at skill position talent
The New England Patriots have a serious need to add playmakers on offense.
Historically, the Patriots have been able to get by without too many elite offensive skill position weapons because they had Tom Brady under center. New England’s offensive has returned to reality over the past several Brady-less seasons. Under new head coach Jerod Mayo, fans are hopeful that this issue will be thoroughly addressed.
Mayo and his regime have already taken some swings at adding playmakers in his first free agency. The team inked versatile running back Antonio Gibson and wide receiver K.J. Osborn to contracts via free agency. The Patriots also extended tight end Hunter Henry to keep some stability at that position.
New England has admirable depth at running back, wide receiver, and tight end, but they lack a definitive number one option at any position as well. It’s easy to understand why Bourne might want to add someone like Aiyuk to the team.
The Patriots have the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and hold all of their standard picks through the first six rounds. Quarterback is widely assumed to be the position that New England will address with their first-round pick, be it Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, or JJ McCarthy.
Thankfully, the 2024 NFL draft class is deep and talented at wide receiver, so the Patriots will have multiple opportunities on days two and three to add another exciting playmaker to their offense.
